Many people undergo wisdom tooth extractions during their adolescence or early adulthood. In some circles, this procedure is almost regarded as a rite of passage. Of course, it is not always necessary. However, it is often important for a patient’s long-term wellness, particularly if the wisdom teeth are fully or partially stuck beneath the gumline (impacted). What are the dangers of impacted wisdom teeth? This blog post shares some important information.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is an infection that occurs when harmful bacteria sneak beneath the gumline and start to attack the surrounding tissue. In its early stages, it is a fairly minor problem. As it progresses, however, it can lead to serious complications, including tooth loss and a heightened risk of several systemic health conditions.

If a wisdom tooth is partially impacted, it can trap food and bacteria around it. Plaque can form, and eventually, the bacteria in the plaque may attack the gum tissue and lead to gum disease.

Cavities

Because wisdom teeth are located at the back of the mouth, they can be challenging to clean. This is especially true in cases where they are growing in at an odd angle or are partially impacted. Bacteria can easily collect on and around them. This increases the risk of cavities both on the wisdom teeth and on the adjacent molars. With time, untreated cavities can deepen and grow to the point where they cause significant dental sensitivity and pain. They may even lead to severe infections and systemic illness.

Damage to Nearby Teeth

Most people’s mouths are not large enough to accommodate their wisdom teeth. Therefore, as the wisdom teeth attempt to erupt from the gums, they may emerge at the wrong angle. They are likely to push against the other teeth. This can cause discomfort and sensitivity. Your other teeth might even be pushed slightly out of alignment.

Cysts and Tumors

In some cases, noncancerous tumors and cysts form in the tissue around impacted wisdom teeth. They can be quite painful, especially when they place pressure on nearby nerves.
